  • I’ve been bashing my head against the Micro.blog theming system, trying to get it matching the one on my primary website but given the time of day, it’s time to shutdown and try again tomorrow. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

  • I was hoping to start swapping my media server from it’s tower case into my new Slinger CX4712 case over the weekend…but life got in the way. Fingers crossed I can get to it this week, I don’t want to impact any end users. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป๐Ÿ“ท

Empty server case on light-brown carpet, with some bubble wrap in the back of the case, with some boxed computer fans on top, with wires coming out of the front of the case.
  • Is anyone else out there having issues with their Apple Watch Ultra v1 after upgrading to watchOS 10? Even after the unpair / pair dance, my battery is dropping far too fast, havenโ€™t even had the watch on for eight hours and Iโ€™m at 40% left. ๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ญโŒš๏ธ

  • Really wanted to try out some of the new watchOS features, so I downloaded the beta tonight. It was taking a very long time but on a hunch, I turned off the bluetooth and bam! The download time went from two hours to twenty minutes.

Screen grab of the Apple Watch, on the 'Software Update' screen, with 19 minutes remaining for the download.

    Happy nerd alert! ๐Ÿคฃ

  • On a lark yesterday (it was a very long day at work), I decided “oh, what the heck, install the betas”…and honestly, I’m rather surprised. Both my phone and tablet are running faster and smoother. (Side Note: having iOS tag your pets into a collection is amazing. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ) #iOS #beta

  • Random Thought: With Twitter (aka “X”) talking about collecting even more data (link to Ars Technica), now seems like a good time to export my old Tweets, remove the Twitter apps from my devices, and import said data into Micro Blog.

  • Yet another reason why I won’t invest any time, energy, or money into the Google ecosystem: Google kills two-year “Pixel Pass” subscription after just 22 months. ๐Ÿคฃ

  • Just realized the bank holding my mortgage has changed their customer portal (their term, not mine) for the third time since I became their customer. ๐Ÿ˜” I’ll wager a cup of coffee they screwed up the migration of my user profile again, which means I have to call them. ๐Ÿ˜ญ #FirstWorldProblems

  • Ah, nothing like password change / reset day…first you get to change it on your Mac and then your iPad and iPhone and other work machine…and then you get to change it in Teams and Outlook and all the other products. ๐Ÿคฃ

  • Finally yanked out the GPU from my UnRaid server and set up Plex to use Intel Quick Sync; pleased with the results: far less power used and better transcoding performance. ๐Ÿ“บ๐ŸŽฌ I can now go to sleep a happy geek. ๐Ÿ˜ด

  • So very tired of New Egg using my number to text me sale spam. Really wish it was possible to sue companies for using numbers given for 2FA to send sales crap. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Solution: created a burner Google Voice number and now all that crap can go there. ๐Ÿคฃ

  • Took a day off this week (there was no way on earth I was going to be able to work ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿถ) and making up for it today; currently flighting with authentication issues between .Net and Java land, it might be time for a little break.

  • So dang happy it’s Friday, even if I am dealing with crazy java dependency issues. Sometimes…or at lot of the time…I really miss .Net ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿ’ปโ˜•๏ธ

  • Battery Backup

It isn’t often you’re able to test redundancy in your home set up but today, my power went out. I was in the middle of a meeting, sharing application support information with my current development team, when suddenly the lights went out in the basement (my home office is in the basement). At first, I was completely confused…all the lights had gone out, but my monitor was still on…? I stopped the meeting, interrupting our business analyst, in compete shock and bewilderment, asking if they could still hear me.

It was only then I realized I had batteries for most of my computers…which is when my power supply started beeping at me.

A long time ago (I’m not going to say when because a lady never tells his age), I bought a battery on a lark from newegg.com and used it solely for my modem and router. Back then, the apartment I lived in suffered semi-frequent power outages (the building was over 100 years old) and didn’t want to be slaughtered in the middle of a raid (we can talk about my World of Warcraft addiction another time, dear reader). The battery turned out to be a smashing success and life / gaming went on.

A few years down the road from the first purchase I bought a new battery; I needed a bit more oomph, as I’d acquired more gear and equipment. The old one was still holding up but starting to show its age: where once it could keep the internet connection alive for a couple hours, by then I was lucky to get 45 minutes out of it. So, I bought a new one and put almost all my equipment on it (including the new server I’d acquired…but that is a story for another time). The original battery was kept for my work set up: computer, monitor, etc.

Back to the present…it turns out the local power company was outside my house, switching out my meter. With no notice and just one knock at the door, they took out the old one and put in a new one. I really would have appreciated some advance notice but why would a monopoly care about its customers? Still, it’s nice to know my batteries are still working!

So, the moral of the story: make sure you have your internet equipment and computers on a battery backup…especially if you’re in constant meetings during the last two weeks of your employment.
