Work Exhaustion
Feb 2nd, 2007 at 11:34 pm by Jon
So, I just accidentally took a two hour nap… I’ve been exhausted for two days because I went from going to bed at 4am and getting up at 1pm to crawling into bed at 11:30pm and getting up at 6:45am. Thus far, the transition has not been easy…
But that’s not what I’m here to talk about! I have a job! And it sucks!Â
Actually, the last two days haven’t really sucked; they’ve just been rather interesting. Yesterday, I got to work bright and early at 8:15 to finish up some paperwork and walked into the conference room at 8:30am. Unfortunately, I’m going to be locked in that conference room for the next four weeks since that is where the three of us (John the manager and Chris the other developer) have taken up residence. I was basically told that I would not be seeing anyone else from the company because the work load would be so high. (I think that kinda sucks b/c there is a totally cute gay guy who works down the hall!)
So, I walk into the conference room and I hit the ground running. I had to help set up my computer, get internet and intranet access, reinstall Visual Studio 8, and figure out my company email situation. While doing this, John explained how the Microsoft Access application we are replacing with an ASP.NET website works with the backend database. It only took an hour and a half to explain what he called ‘the basics’ of the program! After that we, as in the three of us and Laura (the other IT person in this company of forty), sat down and designed the basics of the GUI.
Second day comes around and I totally didn’t get enough sleep, so I was yawing like crazy. From the hours of 8:30 to about 1:30, I laid out the GUI format for the content in an HTML TABLE format. For those of you who are in Web Dev, you might be cringing right now. I certainly am! However, they have very specific needs which can only be solved through the use of tables. After I did that, I was charged with redoing a section of pages they (as in Chris and John) had devolved as a test. Of course, it took me a while to figure out how the pages were working (seeing as this project is in VB.NET and I have far more experience with C#), but by the end of the day, I had actually gotten almost one page done!!!
I really feel like I don’t know what the hell I’m doing…
Oh, by the way, I did get the second interview @ CPI! The catch is I have to somehow get away from work without anyone knowing I’m going to interview for another, better job. I think I’ll use the old doctor appointment excuse… Thatâ??s always worked for me in the past! The interview is at 3pm on Tuesday. Hmmm, that reminds me of Tuesday 3am from Latter Days (even if you’re not gay, I highly recommend you watch that movie, as it is totally awesome). Even though the people I work with @ Vandover are incredibly nice and I really feel like I fit in there, the other job is better and I would be an employee with benefits!
So to wrap up, I’m very very tired right now and I still have to finish the search engine feature for my other site. I think Matt may have been right in telling me I wouldn’t have enough time for this blog, let along maintaining my other website.
………..NO!!! I’ll manage!
Goodnight and good luck!
