Rain Smell

I’m not normally one for humidity. In fact, I usually go out of my way to avoid it completely. However, there was just something in the air today that not only made the moisture bearable, but actually enjoyable. I stepped outside this morning and it hit me. It had just rained and the smell of a fresh storm was still in the air. It wasn’t until I got to work when I realized what I’d been reminded of Philmont.
Philmont is a boyscout ranch I visited in my youth. Well, not youth as I went four summers in a row starting at the age of fourteen… The second summer I went there, we spent two nights at a camp name Copper Park. It was on the other side of the ranch’s biggest mountain, so it is pretty isolated; my group ended up seeing maybe a total twenty people. There was always the smell of rain in the air at this camp site. We were surrounded by ancient trees. It was just utterly peaceful.
Today I was reminded of how simple everything was back then. No computers, no internet, no job. Just silence and solitude. Peace and harmony without any stress. I miss those times.
