Harry Weekend

Somehow this weekend ended up being entirely about hair. Sort of… It started off when Shannon and I decided to go wait in line for the stroke of midnight to get the final Harry Potter book. However, we decided to have a bit of fun before hand.
It was my idea to dye hair. At least I’m pretty sure it was… Of course, I could go on babbling for hours but the end result was my hair turning from a light brown to a greenish-black (the green showed up b/c the blue streaks we tried to put in my hair didn’t take). I totally love it, so I big thank you goes out to Shannon!
After that, Wendy showed up with a child in tow (her little girl is completely adorable) and after the costumes were fixed up (Shannon went as Tonks), and the makeup was applied (no comment), we were off to the Border at Brentwood. Never have I seen so many children out of bed so late! Wendy’s kid started getting sleeping after 10 (we got there a little after nine) and Shannon wasn’t far behind. Granted, Alein (I’m sure I didn’t spell that right) is only 4 (or maybe five, I was too busy thinking about the book to pay attention) and Shannon had been working over ten hours a day all week up till Thursday, but still…it was the night of Harry Potter! …just joking Shannon, please don’t kick me at work on Monday…
We ended up sitting about on the floor talking and sleeping and talking…and did I mention sleeping? But in the end, it was all worth it! The lines opened up at 12:01 and by 1:15 I was out of the store and safely in my car with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Once I started I couldnâ??t stop reading! However by 2:45 my neck started to protest, so I drove home and read until the sun started to show its wonderful face (about 6ish).
I had planned on getting up early to finish the book before going out with Sonya and Kirsten but sadly my arm demolished my alarm clock sometime around 8 or so I vaguely remember. So after getting ready to go out and then falling asleep, the girls and I ended up at the South County mall. After wandering around a bit, we ended up at the movie theater in line to watch Hairspray. To be completely honest, I never had any intention of watching the movie. We had originally gone to see Harry Potter (again) but it was sold out… Thankfully my fears of boredom werenâ??t realized as the movie was actually rather entertaining and quite good. Say what you will but John Travolta, but he pulls off a middle-aged overweight woman very well.
Instead of going to eat afterwards (which is something weâ??d normally do) the girls went out to eat with parental units. Of course, this was completely fine with me because I wanted to finish the book! I raced home, make a quick dinner (which of course I gobbled down), and then proceeded to devour the rest of the book. It Was Amazing
FYI: If you havenâ??t read the book, please donâ??t ready below this (Kelly, Iâ??m talking to you!). I donâ??t go into complete specifics but Iâ??m sure someone with enough brains (or any for that matter) can figured out certain details from the content below.
As promised, this book gave all the answers. Every question Iâ??d ever asked about Snape, everything Iâ??d wondered about the connection between Voldemort and Harry, the absurdities of the sainthood of Dumbledore, who was going to die…all answered! It was like getting the perfectly wrapped package for your birthday, something so beautiful you donâ??t even want to open.
FYI: This is the point to stop if you havenâ??t read. Now.
Sadly, every book has problems and this one was no exception. It was highly entertaining (I couldnâ??t put it down the last two hundred pages) but the first half of the book (well, the part after the wedding) was a little dull. I realize Rowling had to set the stage for the ending, I just with sheâ??d done it will a little more flair and evened out the excitement throughout the book.
However, the biggest problem I have with the book is the epilogue. Everything up till that point had been nearly perfect. Harry had defeated the Dark Lord, the world was safe, the truth of Snapeâ??s love was reviled along with the errors of Dumbledoreâ??s past. Why ruin it with that (to quote Shannon) wretched ending? Donâ??t get me wrong, Iâ??m all for happy endings. I love nothing better than a happy ending! But this book, this entire series darkness intertwined with the good. I think the ending would have been perfect with Harry mentioning theyâ??d had enough trouble and then wishing for a sandwich.
Will I miss Harry Potter? Yes, of course! I dare you to find a person who wonâ??t miss the anticipation of waiting for that next book and then staying up an entire night to find out what happens next. Iâ??ve spent almost ten years waiting for the conclusion of this series… Part of me wanted it to go on forever but of course that just canâ??t happen; Iâ??d say she ended it at exactly the right time in the series (even if part of me is lying when I type this, wish for more).
retched?! oh my dearest jon, misspell all you like in your blog, but do make sure, when using shannonisms, to double check your spelling. for future reference: the epilogue [like your ability to spell] is wretched.
postscript. mock my fatigue again, i dare you.
